When did the RN stop putting pennant numbers on subs & why?
Its just I don't see the difference between a surface ship displaying its number which they all do to this day and a sub

Jock3, I think the nature of submarine operations are generally covert and their capabilities are always of interest to competing countries, hence making them anonymous helps with this covert veil. Therefore if one sub is spotted in X position then another spotted at Y position are they different subs? or the same one proving it moves at a particular speed etc.... the other option that the Soviets applied was to frequently change the numbers displayed.
