HMS Glatton

HMS Glatton and her sister ship Gorgon were originally built as coastal defence ships for the Royal Norwegian Navy, at Armstrong Whitworths old shipyard in Elswick. She was requisitioned from Norway at the beginning of World War I, but was not completed until 1918 due to the shipyards high workload,

In the autobiography of Captain John Iron, the salvage operation is recorded in detail. Captain Iron was the Dover Harbourmaster and a noted and very successful salvage expert who master minded her removal. His autobiography is entitled Keeper of the Gate and if you can get a copy, it has been long out of print, it is a fascinating read.
