Becoming an all to familiar site now seeing a decommissioning ship. Portsmouth now has 5 Type 42s, 1 aircraft carrier, 1 fleet tanker, 1 ice patrol ship, 1 trials platform and an MCM vessel all laid up awaiting sale.

I have heard for some time that the MoD is looking at closing one of the bases (Portsmouth, Plymouth or Rosyth). With the new Carriers being built at Rosyth from memory, would it not be perhaps more cost effective to close one of the other two bases and keep the ships going instead? It seems pointless to me having three large bases but no ships left to fill them. If the issue is political in the context of losing jobs and thus votes, surely with no ships left it cancels out that argument?

I apologise if this has been covered elsewhere.

Just one Naval Port at one end of our Island would certainly be "putting all (of our few) eggs into one basket" Surely?

Just out of curiosity, would much work have to be done at Devonport to be able to take the new carrier(s)? We know Portsmouth is ok.....and Portland!

Devonport's the bigger base and can take all the fleet, Pompey can at a squeeze. Pompey has the admin and training and is the navy's spiritual home. If Pompey closed it would bounce back as a cruise port, retail and heritage etc Devonport would be lost without and the council there have not interest it seems in maritime heritage.

Cheers Stevo, wasn't sure about the route into Devonport bearing in mind the new ships will be bigger than the old Ark Royal/Eagle. Agreed about Pompey being the spiritual home.....many will disagree! :D

Hi Chaps

Rosyth closed as a naval base in 1992 and the MCMV's and Fishery Protection mved to Portsmouth.

Rosyth is only active as a refiting yard and is NOT classed as a naval base - sadly :-(

I heard that the Surface ships (Frigates, Destroyers etc) will go to Pompey and the amphibious and survey ships to Plymouth with the submarines all being based at Faslane?

Incidentaly HMS Edinburgh deploys to the Falklands on the 25th May - someone get photos please?

Small input,I remember being on the Eagle in the early seventies and we ran aground, entering Devonport Dockyard,on the starboard side twisting one of the prop shafts so there is the manoeuvrability problem with the new carrier, carriers !!

Shouldn't be any problem draught wise entering Devonport, the new carriers draw about 35 ft, same as the KGV class of WWII era, they all used the port with no problem. Its the only base capable of docking the Trident boats too

if mr Salmon gets his independence he pay for his own Naval base
if that happens its a big can of worms, ie nuclear deterrent is based there too etc etc
