Long time ago but I'm sure there was a rumour at the time that the Bulwark might be brought back into service if it was required. Looking at her in this picture it seems most of her radar has been removed so it would have been a big job, having said that the guys at both Portsmouth and Devonport did some pretty amazing work in 82. It does remind me of a cartoon that was around at the time (probably in Navy News), The Rusty B leaving Portsmouth for the South Atlantic and HMS Victory being towed into drydock for re-activation.
It's true, the plan was to use her as a workshop/accom facility. They even got as far as starting to renew her boiler brickwork, the main drag was still littered with boxes of brand new bricks when she was towed away for scrap.
I remember being on her in 83 as part of a shipborne exercise spent 3 days blowing off bulkhead doors and it was such a shame she had to go remember feeling quite sad that she had been allowed to rust away, the governments should be ashamed the way they have treated our Navy, found out she had a convienant fire just prior to being laid up (saw the damage in the forward mess decks) like victiourous did 12 years before, makes it a good excuse to scrap. Spoke to a few of the dockies who were part of the team to reactivate her in 82, 3 months she could have been ready (with fire damage repaired) , Tiger laid up next her was pretty much ready to sail she was laid up pretty much intact, just had no 6 inch shells (Been disposed of in January of 82) and the crewing was a problem
