HMS HERMES

HMS HERMES

John Winters sent me this for identification. I would say it was BULWARK only because of the choppers.

This was taken in 71 when she was operating as an ASW carrier, the aircraft are Sea King Mk1 & 2 from 814 squadron, at this time she was the first British dedicated ASW carrier.

If this is 814 squadron than the image is from 1976-80. Hermes was not an anti sub support ship until her May-December 1976 refit.

yep i'm slightly out, think its now 73; although she was initially designated as a LPH she still could still operate as a ASW carrier. 814 ASW squadron was reformed in 73 solely to operate from Hermes in the ASW role, hence these aircraft being a mixture of Mk1 & 2 paint scheme and (FOD doors without anti icing guides) would put it at 73. During September 73 she actually took three ASW squadrons 814, 819 824 to sea in exercise Swift Move. unfortunately looking at Neil McCart's history of Hermes quite a few of the photographs are wrongly dated, hence not easy to be specific.
