I'm taking liberties calling Protector HMS at this stage and assume by the lack of white ensign she has not been commissioned into the RN yet.

Looks to have a Norwegian ensign flying from the gaff, which would suggest she's still Norwegian flagged, despite her having changed her name/gained a pennant number, and there being plenty of Matelots on deck.

I've seen her in Aberdeen a few times, and it's worth noting that in the hands of her previous (civilian) owners/operators there would perhaps be 3 or 4 men at each end for stations - how many can be seen in the photograph? I can make out at least 7 on the fo'c'sle alone.

Aside from the flag etc, she's looking like an RN ship already!

Shes on charter to the MoD from GC Rieber Shipping and was called MV POLARBJORN as a temporary replacement for the damaged ENDURANCE. She was due to be refitted in May prior to commissioning in June.

A near sister is another GC Rieber vessel RSS ERNEST SHACKLETON chartered to the British Antartic Survey (BASV).

Interesting, it seems that the flight deck has alredy been moved from above the bridge to the stern. When the flight deck was on "POLARBJORN" the above the bridge configuration would not allow her to embark a helicopter, one of the drawbacks of HMS SCOTT when she stood in for ENDURANCE.

FRC is situated on the port side, immediately aft of the funnel. From the other photo, her fit of liferafts are situated at either side of the aft end of the accommodation, not to mention the addition of two bona fide lifeboats.
Presumably the RN will spend a great deal of money replacing them with Pussers own versions?

Navy Dave,
Thanks for the "Navy News" news which includes:
"her ship’s company (which will include one Norwegian civilian Chief Engineer throughout her RN service)"

Interesting, seems the Norwegians aren't taking any chances then.

Bearing in mind the speed the RN want to put her into Service it's not suprising that they are retaining the Chief along along with the reason Jim has possibly intimated. If she prove's suitable the RN will most probably buy her, eventually, I would think they are already working on the drawing's to give her a hanger and Flight Deck for a Budgie to see if it is a feasable proposition.
