Oh , what should have been! A dozen of these today, and the RN would be in a much better state. She looked the 'biz' when she was flat out on all 3 (?) engines

Thanks for pointing out date error. Apparently she commissioned into RN in 1971.

Nick, Totally agree with your comment. A dozen of the Aussies Armidales, which I would liken to Tenacity, would be a fantastic addition and probably more useful for training and fishery protection duties than the P2000's and Rivers put together!

Nah! Should have pursued the hovercraft option. These days the hovers are quieter, more fuel efficient and can operate at all tides and invulnerable to mines, perfect for littoral combat.

Unless their skirts get damaged? Then they are ironclads without any iron.

The Israeli's were/are very keen on their Fast Attack Craft and getting their hand's on the one's the French built but had been placed under an embargo(Ouch). The way they managed to remove them was quite a story involving the Company I worked for Maritime Fruit, Aker's and other's which included member's of our Crew. Meanwhile a Company in Darlington was putting together a design for steel hulled "Motor Yacht's" with special feature's in case the move did not come off. but that's another episode (in my forthcoming book).(Thumb)

The skirts can get punctured and the hover still hovers. Quiet often you see damage on the skirts of the cross Solent hovercraft and it has no affect. The Fast patrol craft is vulnerable to airbourne attack as demonstrated by Lynxs helos in the Gulf War and of course the Falklands, their hulls are also easily damaged. At least the hover can in green water environments seek cover.
