Tree-oh,
This a letter of reference from the Master of the Kathleen from 1930 :http://www.shipsnostalgia.com/gallery/showphoto.php/photo/110698/ppuser/13400
My first ship, did a happy year on her till she was sold to kettlewells, my first trip was to kiel, loaded scap iron from the submarine pens for Goole, The little box seen under the ensign is the Ice box, all the meat etc was kept up there, not very handy for the cook. Capt Pearce used to relate a story of being aboard her during the war off Lands End, a sub came to the surface and looked them over for what seemed like a long time, then it submerged and they were all waiting for the big bang but nothing happened, so he figured the sub must have thought they were not worth a torpedo, but they did have a very uncomfortable feeling for the rest of the trip
