On October 30, 1923, the Fomalhaut was placed in the service of the Government Navy of the Dutch East Indies and assigned to Amboina station in the Moluccas. After the militarization of 1939 the Fomalhaut stayed on post in the Moluccas. On February 8, 1942, Hr. Ms. Fomalhaut, together with Hr. Ms. Albatros, was instructed to take the spouses and children of the crew on board and to come to Java via Koepang. A tanker from the KPM was escorted on the final route. On February 24, the Fomalhaut suffered damage during a Japanese air strike on Surabaya. On 2 March, the ship was scuttled by her own crew on the roads of Surabaya, between the Navy Etablishment and Oostervaarwater.
