Looks as if it has been put on upside down. I did ask someone why this was so, but typically I've forgotten the answer. No doubt a member will give us the answer.
Cheers, Alan.
I see quite a lot of ships with this type of hatch cover . I must ask why!. I remember speaking to one Captain and he said they were a nightmare to maintain ie paint and that they also held a significant amount of water when in heavy weather.
I think the idea is that the underside is smooth so that inside the hold is easy to keep clean so that there is less chance of cargo being left on the underside of the hatches.
Mike,
I heard the same explanation today, but was also told that by having the hatch cover strengthening on the outside it altered the gross tonnage to the owners' advantage.
Alan.
