Ion

Ion

Sunderland- built "Ion" laid up in London's King George V dock in November 1982. She's alongside her sistership "Iason".

Both ships were built by Doxford in 1970 and, if I remember correctly, were owned by London Greek shipowner, Fafalios.

IASON and ION were both on charter to United Arab Co for 2 years and as a rigger for W.F. White & Co I worked on them during their visits to Tilbury Docks,, Their cargoes were heavy machinery, huge drums of cable and vehicles which we secured and lashed. Ending the charter they were laid up.
That is when the photo was taken..

Yes - it isn't Sunderland but Smith's dock that's wrong. They were Doxford built - 1970-1971. Iason is building #891. The first Ion -> Benefactor is building #894. The Ion in the photo is #896 and was laid down I think as Isokvatis.

BTW the names look to have been transliterated with an I rather than a J. In plain English they'd be Jon and Jason.

Cheers, Geoff

Actually, the ships have name as they are pronounced in Greek. The correct name is Isokratis. not Isokvatis. All ancient Greek names.

Ion was built in 1971 (IMO. 7109350) (from http://www.miramarshipindex.org.nz/)
Builder: Doxford Sunderland, Pallion #896
Launch:24-5-71
Completed:9-71
GRT:11506
DWT:17070
LOA:164.5
LPB:152.4
Beam:21.4

In 1985 she was renamed GANG CHENG, and was scrapped in 2000 in China.
Iason (IMO. 6926701) was renamed XIN JI. She was scrapped in 1998.

PS. Found the same photo here: http://www.rosenkranz-shipphotos.de/cm/displayimage.php?album=84&pos=6

Oops. Yes, Doxford, not Smith's Dock which of course was in Middlesbrough. (Thumb). Photo details edited accordingly.

She came to Middlesbrough however. I piloted her into Middlesbrough Dock in January 1975.
