Tight fit!
I remember going through the locks on the Manchester ship canal on Clan vessels and needing quite a bit of engine power to get in some of them due to the build up of water around the bow.

Back then (60's& 70's) we used to say if you fell in you didn't drown but broke your neck!Probably nice and clean now though!

Went through the Great Lakes in July 1971 on Bel Hudson. Believe at time (and might still be?) the maximum permitted width for entry to the Seaway system was 75ft 6 ins and Bel Hudson was 75 ft 2 ins!!

That's interesting dave. The beam width of the Irma is given as 24 metres which is 78ft. 8.875 ins.
Maybe the 24metres is an approximation, but if so it still doesn't fit???

The Lakes beam restriction used to be 75'6'' ,don't know what it is now. One of the problems was the pilots landing the ships heads on the lock knuckle and this used to cause , if it happened too often, steel renewal which was quite costly, as you can imagine. A number of owners started to get some hefty bills when ships went into d.d., for surveys.

The Texaco Mississippi, a jumboized T-2, was on regular service in the Lakes, and used to come to the West Coast on occasion. She had large Oak timbers secured on her sides to lessen damage from the locks transits. Now I understand why after viewing this photo!

We took Northumberland up to Toronto in 1964 and there was a lot of damage in the lower hold of No 2 hatch. As it was an insulated compartment the repairs were very costly and as far as I know the Company never accepted cargo above Montreal again.
