Isle of Guernsey

A case of 'Call the Pollution Police!' The Isle of Guernsey from an early photo during her career.

My memories of her are from having had my first ever experience of an exceptionally rough voyage aboard ship when sailing from Guernsey to Southampton in 1955.

Saw her along with Normannia, Falaise and Isle of Sark in the basin used by British Railways ferries in 1959. Had great views of the illuminated funnels of Queen Mary in the nearby Ocean Terminal. Just Wonderful.

Period 1930-1933, before white paint on superstructure extended down to upper deck level. Oil fired boilers as built. I suppose easier/cheaper than transporting coal south. As I remember her she was relatively clean burning but would for no apparent reason lay a thick smoke screen for about 10-15 secs every so often.
