The early canals in Britain were built to a narrow gauge to accommodate barges of 7ft width. This was an economy measure, as it was cheaper to build narrow locks, bridges and tunnels. Many of today's canal leisure boats are 6'10" wide and can reach most of the canal system if 58' long or less. Wider boats exist, but are limited to the canals and rivers with the wide locks.
