President Roosevelt said the Liberty ships were 'Ugly Ducklings". I am sure he probably said it with fondly thoughts in mind.

Liberties are damn good looking ships. In peacetime livery.... ahhhhh!

To Chad ( Chadburn / Geordie Chief ).

Thank you very much for your PM. I've tried to mail you an answer. Unfortunately my mail to you doesn't dispatch.

I've searched the internet for information about ship wrecks in Rotterdam and Botlek in the 1960's, but I cannot find anything. I don't know which ship wreck, it could have been ( covered in seaweed at Botlek in 1968 ).

The first time I was in Rotterdam and Botlek was in 1972 - by then, I think, this ship wreck had been removed to be scrapped.

Best regards.

For many years there was a Liberty ship on the beach near Vung Tau at the mouth of the river to Saigon, Vietnam. She was right below the lighthouse on Cap Saint Jacques and it sure looked like an insurance job. Often wondered what would have caused her to go high and dry right below the lighthouse.

Wallace, the wreck of the Liberty ship, you mentioned, could be that of the Greek Liberty ship, Ioannis K.

On the shipspotting site there is a very good picture of the grounding of this Liberty ship, Ioannis K near Vung Tau, Vietnam in the 1960's.

Regards.

Thanks for that Astra. I note that the comments under the shipspotting photo state she ran aground January 3, 1968 due to a steering failure and scrapped in 1973.

Just before that trip to Viet Nam, a seaman jumped ship and married a local girl in Astoria.
