RobW suggested that the structure below the bridge was to
counteract vibration.

One of the three ships you have mentioned was the Russian
Magnitogorsk.. I often worked on her in Tilbury Docks during
late 1970's into 1980's.
She was on Leningrad - Tilbury -Cuba service...
I don't think stowaways would be found on her!

Stowaways were alsways a problem prior to departure from West Africa hence on some occasions dogs were used to locate them in addition to additional security guards that were posted whilst in port.
