They were great ships in their time. Good accommodation and built like brick 'toilets'.

Used to see them all the time on the Far east service. Was this the one that grounded on Pulau Rondo at top of Malacca Straits?

Did my last deep sea trip on the Kowloon Bay ( did 2 voyages a few years previous ) Yes she did ground in the Mallaca Straits, did a lot of damage. They were great ships, superbly well built, a great credit to the designers and the German yard that built them.

Built in the days when crew comfort was still considered by designers, nowadays it's all about maximising cargo carrying space

Yeah, she's the one that ran aground on Rhondo Island. The OOW at the time then got offered a job by Smits (I think?) who were the salvage company who did the initial towing down to Singapore.

.......... Well, that's the rumour anyway.
