galley boy taking no chances, crew messman no jacket, remember them great big jackets hard to get through doors wearing one

I often wondered what it would be like jumping over the side with one. A number suggested that you were better off holding you arm over the arm hole when you jump. Less chance of breaking your neck. Awarkward to wear when trying to wind up the engine, also bloody hard to row.

I had to go off a 12m board in one, left hand pinching my nose, right arm tight over left wrist and holding on for dear life to the left arm hole. Point your toes on the way down, legs tight together. Oh! and you better hope that the straps are tight and proper or the jacket WILL ride up as you hit and possibly break your neck! Great fun!

I sometimes reckon whoever designed the stupid bloody things should be condemmed to wear on......for eternity.

There's still a good few ships out there today with them - still the 'Standard' BOT Lifejacket.
