I remember it well.
They used to hail (shout) (or later by megaphone/loud hailer) the outbound ships and ask them where they where going or inbound where they were from.!
No problem until the wind blew.
However they did not have problems with the internet then!

the old joke about this hailing station in a strong wind is
Hailing Station = what ship

Hailing station = WHAT SHIP

Not so funny written down but hilarious after a few pints if done with a proper Geordie accent (Sailed many years on Geordie ships)
