On 1st June, 1964, the Salvage Tug Tai Koo sailed to Lantao Island where m.s. Madura (ex Rugeley) was surveyed, as she lay, after passage of Typhoon Viola, with a view to possible salvage. John,
Launched by Doxfords as the \"Empire Northfleet\" in 1945 she was completed as \"Chumleigh\" for W. J. Tatem. Bought by Stephens, Sutton in 1961 and renamed \"Rugeley\" and sold by them in 1964 to Union Fair Shipping of Hong Kong who renamed her \"Madura\". 28 May 1964 driven aground at Hong Kong by typhoon.
Refloated 10 July but, according to the WSS \'Stephens, Sutton\' history, a CTL and sold to Hong Kong breakers the following month.
As you can see from the name on her stern she didn\'t get a chance to have her new name painted on and she is still in Stephens, Sutton colours. Only pic I have seen of her aground.
Regards,
Dave

Thanks Dave for your comments. I will amend my note about "repaired" to "scrapped" - thinking about the state she was in it was, of course, the most likely outcome!

Great John this information;the VIOLA with her 70 miles-per hours passage Crown Colony caused the MADURA to break her moorings and drift onto rocks, holing N 1-2
and 3 holds and flooding her engine- room. She also listed 30 degrees.

Hi Tanker,
Many thanks for details on damage to M.V. Rugeley/Madura. I wonder if you can help with story/details relating to wreck of Cosmo Trader? See photograph.
Regards,
John.

Hi Japottinger,
The salvage tug "Tai Koo" under its Master William (Bill) Worrall certainly is the vessel in the background. Have you details of the first "Tai Koo" by any chance? I am compiling a list of all vessels built or owned by Taikoo Dockyard - all information would be appreciated.
John
