m/v Piako

A bit of weather, taken from the NZSC's Piako some time in 1969. The unique "Velle" crane can be seen secured on #2 hatch, also good photo of the McGreggor hatch covers.

Tom,
The Pie Cart and Somerset must have been the first NZS ships to have McGreggor hatch covers and the only two ships in the fleet with Velle cranes (fancy derricks)??

Dox, Yes they were and on the Piako the 1st Refrig Engineer looked after them, (belive it or not) Before joining the ship I was sent to the McGreggor works somewhere in the north of England to gain some first hand experence on their operation. The NZSCo even flew me up, put me up in a hotel and then flew me back again and this was Jan/69 !!!

Tom,
I seem to remember on the "T" class ships the Freezer looked after the hydraulic hatches, must have been the norm.

2 fine vessels. Pity the Piako never had such a good name as Somerset on the coast though. Ha!!
