MAHENO

MAHENO

The MAHENO was built by Wm. Denny & Bro.,Dumbarton, Scotland in 1905 for the Union Steam Ship Co trans - Tasman passenger service.
During WW1 she was converted to a hospital ship and served from 1915 -19. She is seen here berthed at Port Chalmers on 25 April 1916. In 1935 and after 30 years of service she ran aground on Fraser Island , north of Brisbane while under tow to Japan for breaking up and would have probably become part of Japan's Imperial ambitions in the form of steel for the war machine.

My absolutely favourite ship, I have a number of photos of her including some of her launch.

In the background is the Antarctic exploration vessel "Aurora" and the tug "Dunedin" which had towed her into port on 3 April from a position near the Snares Islands.
