Surprised to see C/E George Black without trademark cigarette holder.
He was also (possibly) the only C/Eng in the MN to have "scrambled egg" on the peak of his uniform cap. George would go out of his way to make the Master's life as difficult as possible.

I sailed with him on Mathura late 1963/64. ( I was Jnr 4th) I guess the cigarette holder was to wean him off the **** then.

Sometime late 1974 or early 75 when I was offshore with BP I was in Middlesbrough visiting a yard building accommodation modules for Forties Field.
Markhor was near by and I went aboard, George was Chief. He remembered me from Mathura 10 years earlier and gave me a tour of the engine room
I also met Charlie Ball on board at the same time. Glad to hear he is still well

Charlie Bauld . Supt; it was he who sent me the prints of Brock saling vessels I have posted in my gallery. Went to dinner with him ashore in Boro last time I saw him when I was Chief on the coast . He fell asleep with his head in the food ! had to take him back to the hotel . He liked his tipple .

Was having a drink with Ray Waring over Christmas and pointed the way to these pics of his time on Mahout. His brother, Frank was a mate of mine in ED's.

Give Ray my very best ! He was a great guy to sail with and a very good sense of humor . Ask him if he remembers the night ashore in Melbourne with " Gorbals John " when we were all thrown out of the St Kilda hotel ( After John smacked a Navy sailor for ' looking at him "
Managed to talk our way out the first instance and they just moved us to another bar in the hotel . Then some idiot touched John on the Bum and he hit him too ! Our feet never touched the ground and all 3 of us went down the staircase and off to greener pastures .

Happy Days
