This photo makes me consider how much the travel experience was a part of sailor life in the old times, because not at all available to ordinary working class people.
Three of those at a time, looming up and shading the light, becomes a bit heavy. I for one longs for a lowly little steam tramp in the picture. One could imagine oneself standing by the rail of one, black with soot, to spit some bacca, and pity the foolish sailors who have to hide themselves away from the view of sensitive upper class eyes, down below in one of those monster ferries.
