Maori - Somewhere in N.Z. waters

I knew the name of the ship when I took the photograph but now I have no idea, the year was 1963.

I think it is the USS Company Inter Island ferry TEV Maori and looking at the hills I would say it was taken down in Lyttelton Harbour

I have despeckled your image a bit and got rid of that large blemish(tear?) - OK?

1965 she was converted to roro.
Sold to Wiltopps Ltd., Hong Kong in 1974. Left Wellington 20/1/1974 under tow to Hong Kong but resold enroute to Yung Tai Steel & Iron Co. Ltd., Taiwan and arrived at Kaohsiung for breaking up 6/3/1974.

Her side doors are open so she must be arriving after a night crossing. They would be closed immediately on departure. That much light before 7am would put it in January.

thanks for posting

The observations made by the members of this board never cease to amaze me. With the intelligence of this board, you could rule the world. And yes, that's a compliment. As for ruling the world, that would only happen if the wives allow us out after tea.

Great photograph. I have added her name to the title, so that anyone looking for a photo of Maori will find this one.

Thanks for all the comments; at the time of posting I thought she was a passenger vessel but now realise she is indeed a ferry.

@Ngaio 62
I sailed from Lyttelton at daylight on the morning of 30th. December 1963 bound for Timaru so that would appear to set the date and place of the photograph.

The photograph was taken on a 35mm Kodachrome slide which I then scanned to send to the site which is why the poor quality, the original is perfect except for the blemish (gadgee) which in fact was caused by fungus.
