One of the great French marine painters.
I saw a huge original in the Maritime Museum in Paris years ago. A sailship in the arctic.

A sailship in the arctic. That would be the Pourquoi Pas?, on which Marin Marie served in his youth.

Perfect stein! Yes it's the painting „Pourquoi Pas“!

(Wikipedia)
Peintre Officiel de la Marine (POM) is the name of an official marine painter of the French Navy in the range of a naval officer. This oldest artists' association in the Grande Nation has existed since the July Revolution in 1830. Louis-Philippe Crépin and Jean Antoine Théodore Gudin were promoted to officers. The number of members of the POMs is limited to a maximum of 40 people. An official marine painter receives no fee, but the French state has decreed the entire work of a POM as a national cultural heritage.
