Maturata

I sailed on the Maturata in the summer of 1968, as senior deck apprentice. She had just come out of Greenock Dry Dock, after running aground on Rosneath Patch in the Clyde. Voyage a Cunard Charter was Glasgow, New York, Corpus Christi, Houston, Galveston, New Orleans, Mobile, Ponta Delgada in the Acores (for fresh water, as the evaporators were shot!) thence Manchester.

I was about 7 years before you Marcus, Feb to June 1961 UK Red Sea, Colombo, Chalna,UK. My last trip as an Apprentice in name anyway - next ship Matra as 4th Mate. She had some likable attributes but I cannot remember what they were, much preferred Maskeliya of the small uns !

Michael I notice that in most of your posts you were alway on board various ships before other correspondents. You were always beating us to it! I shall keep watch to see if someone scores a point on you! Cheers John

I took this picture on the way down the Hoogly when I was on the the Maskeliya 1959-60. We all tried to get a picture of the damage to her bow, seemingly she had an incident with the quay on the Indian coast. I have to agree with Michael that the Maskeliya was a very happy ship. Cheif Ronnie Illife, 2nd Eng. Ken Converey and I was 3rd Eng.

Wearing our " piss up boilersuits " Mine only had 12 pockets ( each big enough to hold a cold Tennants ) It was like being personally airconditioned . Paul Georgeson ( Electrician ) had a tartan one made which held a full case ! He would "Klunk as he walked ! " Derek
