A rare view--thanks for sharing. I don't think MAURETANIA made very many transits through the Canal in her lifetime.

Old Cunarder you are right!
She was magnificent.
I did once see her leaving Gibraltar but trying to turn too sharply only to have a minor collision with a Russian ship. I was on Reina del Mar at the time, it would have been in 68 or 69.

Chris, The ship that collided with the anchored Russian tanker (loaded with petroleum for Cuba) was Carmania. I was aboard and had just waved goodbye to the agent in his launch and was looking over the side to see that we were not turning tightly enough. The tanker knocked a hole in the starboard bow and we bounced off. I remember vividly, the Russian Bridge Team, waving their fists up us. All I could do was wave limply back. Master was "Basher Arbuckle" although I think the Gib pilot took the rap. Captain Arbuckle was also known for knocking over a crane in Izmir and sinking a buoy in, I think, the Baltic. I think I am right in saying he was in command when we ran aground in the Bahamas and stuck for six days.. (chart error)
Carmania was arrested in Gib until the company put up the required funds for damage to the Russian ship.

It doesnt bear thinking about if there had been sparks and the tanker had caught fire.

I saw her on several occasions from the train between Edinburgh to Dunferline, from the time she arrived still intact untill there was virtually nothing left of her; heart breaking to see such a lovely ship reduced to scrap.

Was it really Carmania, funny how the years play tricks with the memory.
We had the perfect view of the incident and it seemed inevitable the moment she started to turn that it would happen.
One can only be thankful the tanker did not ignite, it would have been even more horific than Royston Grange.
With a nickname like "Basher" how did he get any command let alone a passenger ship?
