Built in 1949 as the Blohmfontein Castle she went on to become Patris, Mediterranean Island, and then Mediterranean Star. Withdrawn and following a lengthy lay-up in Eleusis Bay her name was shortened to Terra a

The ex-AMERICA is there on the left, but she is not the white ship to the left. That is the ELLINIS, which is lying in between the MEDITERRANEAN STAR and the ex-AMERICA.

Lovely shot indeed, Bert! Regarding comments, please correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't America become Ellinis?

Hey Syd! Ellinis was the ex LURLINE, sister to Britanis ex Monterey and Homeric (Home Lines) ex Mariposa of Matson Nav. Thanks for the correction RD. I hadn't seen the funnel exhausts of Ellinis!

At the end of her career for Chandris, she was rebuild into a ferry for the Patras - Brindisi route. Her lower passenger deck were ripped out and two side doors were installed (You can see them both on the side) for RoRo activity. The ferry trade was not very succesfull for Chandris and within a year or so the service was stopped and the ship handed over to Karageorgis who exploided her further on (i'm not sure) a route to Egypt. It seems that when she went for scrap, she was still in a pretty good condition.

Emmanuel, thanks for correcting this ole landlubber re America.

Re Patris, I remember her in Sydney on numerous times in the sixties.
She also holds another place in many Australian hearts, as it was used as temporary accommodation for nine months in 1975 for those left homeless after Cyclone Tracy destroyed the city of Darwin on Christmas Day 1974.

Αs far as I know, Karagiorgis used her on the same route under name Mediterranean Island, but later on, the ship was chartered to an Arabian company, and the ship was renamed Mediterranean Star.
