I've seen similar departure from Melbourne with Flotta Lauro's "Roma" when the band struck up "Arrivederci Roma," everybody sang and I've never seen so many people with tears streaming down their faces at any one time.

You do not see it today. with security at the level it is, observers are kept behind the Customs gate, and the only persons allowed on the pier when a cruise ship is in , are passengers, When ships leave, the nearest person is approx. 200 mtrs away

Apart from the crane driver, the other person with a nice (relaxed) view, is the character posing like Elvis on the front wing of his car.
