I stayed at the Merchant Navy Hotel in Lancaster Gate on one occasion during the early nineties. I can remember the huge bedroom and the lovely stairs. The breakfast wasn't bad either and the location was excellent.

Not sure when it closed but it's the Lancaster Gate Hotel now.

Stayed over a number of times in the 70s and what a great place. Paddigngton station about 10 minutes walk away - had a night club underneath the staion. A few dodgy places n between aswell.

Then there was the pub just around the corner (the Mitre?) - nightly mean sheppards pie and live bands in the basement at night. A really livelly area and nearly ended up being press ganged into Sanko during a night on the tiles!

Looking on google it was sold by the trustees of the Merchant Navy Welfare board to Hong Kong developers in April 2002

Although the Merchant Navy Hotel at Lancaster Gate is no longer, to say that "there is no where else to stay now" is a bit of an understatement 😉

For example if you wish to stay at the former Merchant Navy Hotel which is now the Lancaster Gate Hotel price's start from £65 per night for a twin bed room including breakfast which is an absolute bargain for London!

London has one of the highest amounts of accommodation available anywhere in the world catering to all tastes and budgets!
