Messoudieh rebuilt

Messoudieh rebuilt

Originally launched on the Thames as far back as 1874, as an ironclad, she was substantially rebuilt by Ansaldo in Genoa in 1902. 'Mesudiye' (Commander Besiktasli Arif Nebi) was moored as guardship just south of the Dardanelles Narrows at Chanak, in Sari Siglar Bay on the Asian side, when on 13th December 1914 she was torpedoed by British submarine 'B-11. Against the strong currents, 'B-11' (Lt Norman Holbrook) managed to penetrate some 12 miles and negotiated five lines of mines. Sighting her at anchor, 'B.11' fired one torpedo from 6-800 yards. 'Mesudiye' rolled over and sank in 10 minutes, trapping many men inside who were later released. Most of her guns were salvaged for the shore defences. Losses totalled 38 men, including 10 officers. 'B.11' escaped safely back to sea and Lt Holbrook was awarded the Victoria Cross

I have read that she sunk in shallow water, I wonder if she was later scrapped on the spot or if she can be dived.

There are two pictures of the sunk battleship in the book "the ottoman steam navy, 1828-1923" showing her rolled over.
I am not sure if this is her wreck, even if it was righted in order to be scrapped, the vents and funnels could'nt be still in place.

You're right Aristo, the picture captioned "Messoudieh coule" in my book doesn't look like the ship pictured above. I suggest the following: not just the Germans, but even the French has a bit of trouble with the spelling of Turkish names. We've now had the Medjidieh parading as Midilly, why should she not also parade as the Messoudieh? Does your book by any chance show the Medjidieh mined off Odessa? Could that be our wreck?. Regards, Stein.

With the identity of this wreck now resolved, the question that remains is if and when the wreck of the Messoudieh was scrapped.
