During WW2 Wellington was the staging post for some of the major US invasions into the South Pacific.In Clyde Quay boat harbour US Navy personnel prepare landing barges and other small craft which would be used at Tarawa in the Gilbert and Ellice Islands and other invasions. The boat harbour is now the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club. The boat harbour is situated on Oriental Parade just before the beach at Oriental Bay a popular inner city beach.
