I am interested to know why a number of coasters/cargo ships have such a break of forecastle like that therefore having a lower freeboard in the first hatch area? Thanks in advance.

Interesting question, Leander!

From a purely "empirical" point of view, looking at the model vessel, I would point out the large number of scuppers abaft the No.1 hatch. I assume that the lower level of the deck and hatch is designed to "break" a big greenie enveloping the fokky head. That way, the wave could not run down the length of the main deck (No.2 - Aft) which would affect the stability (free surface effect). Just a thought.......
Rgds.
