That's a very peculiar rusticated effect (in the anti-fouling paint) you've captured there, what's causing it?

The light has highlighted the vessel, sometimes you get this effect in winter with Kodachrome slides.

It is a consequence of using 'self polishing paints', probably showing my age and lack of knowledge by calling them that, on welded ships. When shell plating is welded to the frames it obviously heats up but when it cools it leaves the plating over the frame proud of that between the frames, and the paint wears faster. There are a few photos on SN showing this effect.

Did not the orignal NewZealand star have a story to tell in Bluff. The pool sent me to join her but I got work with common bros as a cedet .

The original NZ star was the ship that was the first offical merchant ship to berth at the opening of the Bluuf Island Harbour in 1960.

She arriveD along with HMNZS Lachlan and the day included a flyover by 3 Canberra bombers of the RNZAF.

I will post some photos later on.

The second NZ star never visited Bluff and later was lengthened and renamed Churchill.

I thought this ship was built/originally named Australia Star and renamed New Zealand star late 70s. Sister ship of Southland Star.

This was Columbia Star the sister of California Star.I think California Star became Fremantle Star. Both ships being employed on the Middle East Container Service.
I think the sister of Southland Star was Wellington Star both converted and employed on the West Coast USA container service.

Columbia and California Star were originally built for the N. Europe/USWC "Johnson Scanstar" service. Johnson Line (which provided five ships - the Axel Johnson series) and East Asiatic Co. (provided the Fionia and Meonia) were the partners. Blue Star and Johnson pulled out during the late 80's leaving EAC to run the service with chartered tonnage and later a slot charter from Evergreen Line. Believe the California Star was chartered out for a while to MSC around 1986/7 on the transatlantic trade.
