RIL Passenger ship, Nieuw Holland which replaced two smaller passenger ships on Australia / Indonesia / HongKong run. The control tower shown is the second in Melbourne and has since been replaced by a bigger and more sopihisticated structure down river. Maybe Ruud can supply more info on the ship p

Built 1958 for Holland Africa Line service to South Africa and Mozambique.as Ranfontein.1971 sold to Royal Interocean Line and left Hong Kong on January 21,1972 on first voyage arriving Melbourne February7, replacing Tjiluwah on OZ/Japan run. On August 9 1972 as she was approaching Melbourne, the tug Melbourne, which had bow line was capsized and five crew drowned on tug. She stayed on the Australia/Asia run until October 1974 and then laid up Hong Kong. Sold to China she became Yu Hua and carried Chinese 'technicians' and families to East Africa. Later used on coastal service. Not sure if still afloat.

Thanks Dave, the Cook, one of the A.B'S and the Engineer on Melbourne (ex S.T. Howard Smith) were well known to me, as was the skipper who survived the incident.

Ahoy Oz,
Sure I can and will:

Translation data Dutch-English:
Naam-Name
Bouwjaar-Year of Built
Roepletters-Call Sign
IMO nr-IMO
Maatschappij-Company
Werf-Wharf
BRT-BRT
DWT-DWT
L.o.a. x br. x holte-LOA x B x D
Aandrijving-Engine
Vermogen-Power
rpk-bhp
Knopen-Speed kn
Bijzonderheden-Details.
In this case:
Bijzonderheden=Details-Translation:
Launched as Randfontein[PGYL] for the VNS
In 1970 to Nedlloyd
In 1971 for KJCPL and rebuilt at Flushing at \"De Schelde\"
In 1972 Nieuw Holland
In 1974 sold
In 1975 to Shanghai as Yu Hua
In 1981 rebuilt at Shanghai now called Hai Xing
In 1996 renamed as Herbert under St. Vincent flag for final destination.
In 1996 demolished at Port Alang-India

Note if wanted, I do have "some more" piccies of her.

Great shot of one of my favourite Dutch liners. As NIEUW HOLLAND she looked even prettier than as RANDFONTEIN (in my opinion).

Ruud, if you would like to post some more shot of her, go ahead by all means! :)

Groeten,
Ralph
