NORTH BOAT CAPTAINS

NORTH BOAT CAPTAINS

I am sure there will be some Orcadian members who will remember these two men. They sailed with the then North of Scotland Steamship Co.

This is on the Port Bridge wing of the 1951 built "St Ola" which served on the Scrabster - Stromness route - photo probably taken in the fairly early 50s as Cpt Banks retired abot 2 or 3 years after the ship came into service. Right is Capt W Banks (grandfather of John Banks Stromness Harbourmaster) and on left is Capt Jock Stevenson (Ch Officer at that time). He was from Westray originally but moved to Stromness when regularly on the "St Ola". He retired about 1973 when Capt John(Blazer) Anderson took over for the final spell till that vessel was replaced by the Ro/Ro "St Ola" in January1975.

That ship made 1 round trip Stromness to Scrabster & rtn daily Mon - Saturday apart from July & August when a Sunday trip was made from sometime in the 60s - "Hamnavoe" now does 3 rtn trips Mon - Fri + 2 on Sat & Sunday with 3 on Saturdays too from June - August!!!! How much more we travel these days!!!

I thought I'd add a link to a picture of the 'St. Ola'.
A fine looking ship.
