Built by John Brown, Clydebank in 1955 looks like she is undergoing builder's trials off Isle of Arran. Sold in 1972 she was renamed Kavo Astrapi in Greek ownership.
In 1973 she was sold to Guan Guan Shipping of Singapore and renamed Golden City.
Broken up at Hong Kong 1978

Did you leave the ship because you had to, or did you leave by choice? Hope it's not a stupid question? just that she's a perfect looking cargo boat that, in its era, would have been on a very good run.

Hi Mick
I'm afraid it was a case of having to we arrived in Liverpool from Australia in June 1966 which was during the Seamans Strike, I remember being paid off at the Mercantile Marine Office and along with other crew members we were escorted by Pickets to Lime Street Station to catch our trains home, when the strike ended several weeks later,I was sent by the Shipping Federation to join Houlder Brothers ore carrier Oredian

1st ship, joined in Sydney February 1965 and returned with her to the UK. First UK port was Hull. I think she returned from a MANZ run.

Hi Raz,

That photo is just as I remember her. I joined her for the maiden voyage in June, 1955 after travelling to Swansea in a delivery van, as there was a train strike. I was 4th engineer, the Captain was Hamish Lawson and the Chief/Eng was Tommy Edgar. We took a trial shipment of chilled beef from Gladstone on that voyage.
Cheers Jon

The "Northumberland" was of the same hull dimensions as the "Middlesex" but was very unlike her in appearance. She had no sisters.
She made her maiden voyage out to Australia in June 1955 and it was not until 1958 that she made her first voyage to New Zealand.
