Olympic

The Olympic in New York. Does she show a slight list? Not easy to ascertain. Obviously the camera angle does not help.
The picture is from the Bain collection in the US Library of Congress. They say there's no restriction on publication.

Yes, that's LUSITANIA in the background, and this shot is pre-TITANIC; probably on her maiden arrival in 1911--see how the paint is worn from her bow, typical on brand new ships. Beautiful! And I don't think she's listing, it's just that the photo is tilted a bit (notice the Hudson River running downhill from right to left!)

Wouldn't she have been dressed overall if this had been her maiden arrival?

I just checked other photos of OLYMPIC from the source--yes, the date is 21 June 1911, her maiden arrival in New York. She was not dressed in any of these photos; I wonder if that just wasn't done in those days?

Rich

Hi Rich,

I get the impression White Star weren't too fussed. In the Carbonora photos of her in the Mersey, prior to going to Southampton for the maiden voyage, she is dressed and looks gorgeous. I think the same was true on her arrival at Southampton.

I call them the spaghetti images...Carbonora [sic?], the photographer's name, sounds so much like Carbonara!

Best wishes,

Mark.
