Oriana in Port Everglades (for Miami) circa 1974

The the sheer bulk of Oriana in every day terms is shown here; she was hailed as a very innovative ship as everything on main superstructure above the boat deck was aluminium, hence they were able to build quite big.As you can imagine there were major corrosion problems when steel met aluminium.Part

Well no one was ever going to touch her for speed under normal running thats for sure!!.....but both she and Canberra had their problems in rougher conditions, outpaced them both on a couple of occasions when the conditions were right!!.

This photo was taken in Port Everglades (Berth 18) not Miami. All the P & O ships used Port Everglades during this period and seldom if ever called at Miami. I piloted the Oriana into PEV three times during the 1970s.
