It is difficult to say which one of the trio is the best looking. Perhaps I'll go for Oronsay as i have more photos and infos of her, including a deck plan. Anyway I like them all, also the Strath-class, the Orion and the Himalaya-class as well. Very handsome ships all of them. Rgds Magnar.
My favourite was always ORSOVA because her hull was slightly more rounded than ORONSAY and ORCADES, and her funnel was a more modern shape. Another reason is because my grandparents sailed from Melbourne to the UK on her maiden voyage and it was my first boarding of a passenger ship, and the start of my intense interest in passenger ships.
Well, I spent 18 months on Oronsay and I met my Woman Assistant Purser wife on there so I will be in trouble if I say anything other than GCNB. My avatar is in fact a loose artistic representation of her, however, I always felt that Orsova was the best looking of that class mainly because of her funnel being slightly more modern.
I did 2 trips on oronsay as pursers bellboy in 1960. it is great seeing the dockds at piermont, does anybody rember the pub on the dock gates The Monty(the montgomery)
Fabulous photo.
I hold the greatest of affection for Himalaya as I made just one brief cruise aboard her. Her final cruise from the UK before she went out to Australia for a season and then on to meet her fate in Taiwan.
I have no experience of those Orient Line sisters (except for the later sister Oriana) but of the earlier ships I'd guess that Oronsay was probably the best one but Orsova is the one that appeals to me. When the P&O fleet today contains the likes of Ventura and Azura what wouldn't we give to have the likes of those lovely Orient Line ladies back again - stuff your balconies and show lounges P&O........!!!!
