Tom.There was an engine-room explosion a couple of days later which put a few of us in hospital, so we missed the sailing to Montreal, then Suva and on to NZ, if I remember correctly.

Yes I remember it, blew some of the engine room plates into the bilge. Visited some of the boys in the hospital. Those Sulzers had a mind of their own.
I remember the 2nd engineer saying that he had fought them (the Sulzers) for too long and that they had won. He was transferred the next day.

I was standing on the top plates with two other engineer cadets. The plates came up around us but we eventually got out on deck with quite serious burns - skin hanging off our hands and arms and faces affected too. We were taken to Albert Dock seamans hospital where we were treated for 5 weeks. I still have scarred arms.
The 2nd Engineer was the worst injured as I remember - he was wearing a short sleeve boiler suit. After a few months we were sent to a steam ship (Devon).
Happy days!

I am certain that I did visit you in hospital, I remember that some of the lads had serious burns to their hands which caused their fingers to swell to an enormous size.
