A P+O advert, dated 1929, for cruising aboard, RANCHI; VICEROY OF INDIA & RANPURA.
Prices ranged from 55 gns. (1 guinea=21 shillings) to 55gns., for cruises up to 22 days from the U.K..
Should have read 55 to 22 guineas!! Cruises were to Norwegian Fjords and the Meddy. The mind boggles at that rate of inflation in just 81 years (one shilling being the equivalent of today's 5 new pence)
No, Neil, it's scanned out of a bound volume of a collection of Blue Peter magazines-4 of them, 1928, 1929, 1930, 1931-they are all in pristine condition and I was given them, by a stranger, about 40 years ago! I just happened to be the duty pilot in the Trinity House, Dover office when the clerk came in and announced that an old R.N. man, who lived in an adjoining flat, had died and left all of his books to the pilots. I, being the only pilot present in the office at that moment was then invited into the clerk's office and given first pick of what was a small mountain of books. Nothing like being in the right place at the right time!!! There are so many, of the then monthly issued magazines, that I still have only read about a half of them.
