No Tabnab, she was ex. "Alcinous". The ship you are thinking about was "Polyphemus" which had all the above names. A great photo shipmate 17, a good looking ship with all derricks flying. I topped and lowered them a few times in my spell with Blue Funnel in early 50's.

We almost always flew our booms on all the U.S. Flag ships I sailed on, and I never experienced a problem with it, yet it seems to be looked down upon by the British. Is there a reason for this? I remember going through typhoons and terrible storms with the gear flying, and never recall a problem with it.
The only problem of that nature I remember was when a padeye on the mast carried away on the Jumbo Boom during the aftermath of a typhoon. The bosun, dayman, and myself went aloft and got a wire strap around the boom and secured it while the captain puffed on his pipe like a steam engine on the bridge watching the whole affair while we rolled about 30 degrees each way. We'd been rolling up to 48 degrees at the height of the storm with a 10 second rolling period. She'd lay over on her side, then snap to the other side; I won't ever forget that.
