Port Auckland

The "Port Auckland", possibly at Auckland. Note the radar scanner, apparently inside a plastic dome.

This is a very early photo of her with her white goal posts between Nos. 1 and 2 hatches and the plastic dome over the radar scanner. Whilst I can't date the photo, I can say it's pre-1960 - I joined her on the 13th February that year and her goal posts were mast colour then and the radar scanner was unprotected!

A lovely ship, I sailed a home trade run on her, and she still sticks in my memory, I had just left the Vindi in 1964, brings tears to my eyes.

This is a very nice ship. Pot line really did have some good looking ships. unfortunatley when i started out at sea only the Chalmers and Caroline were still going. What a pity!

I sailed my last Deep Sea trip on the Port Auckland in 1975.

She travelled from the UK via Panama Canal to New Zealand, did a Kiwi coastal, prepared for freezer cargo, loaded and returned to the UK via Panama Canal and Mediterranean Ports.

A few voyages later she was converted to the livestock carrier, M.V.Mashallah in Singapore.

I went onboard around 1979 in Fremantle, in the course of my business, and found that her general condition had badly deteriorated

Incidentlly, the same Chief Engineer that I did my last trip with was the Chief Engineer on that occasion too.

Only the Master and Chief Engineer were British Seamen.

I left the ship feeling a little sad about the whole situation.

I never saw her again after that.
