When completed she was the largest refrigerated carrier in the Port Line.
In August 1952 she was forced to put into Cape Town with a serious fire in her cargo. A more serious mishap occurred in March 1959 when she collided in the River Elbe with the Indian cargo ship Jalavikram. It was necessary to beach the Port Jackson in a seriously damaged condition, but she was subsequently refloated and docked for repairs.
