Her maiden voyage was out to New Zealand in January 1952 but it was not until January 1954 that she visited the Harbour from which she took her name. However on her fist voyage representatives of the city had crossed to Wellington and presented the vessel a greenstone tiki which was said, at the time to be the largest one ever made.
