I wonder about that new-built wooden tunnel trough which somebody had to enter the ship. I suspect those were prisoners of war, who may not have been too eager to go home. Or anywhere that was the alternative.

The ship is the liberty 'Beloostrov', the date is on or about 25th January 1946, the 'passengers' 150 Latvian and Estonian Waffen SS.

The USSR on her side probably dates from when she was running PNW to Vladivostok while the USSR and Japan were at peace.
At one time she was under the command of Anna Shchetinina , world's first female ship master.

Betrayal upon betrayal, far from nice in any of its aspect this war business. Some say the Swedes bent too far backwards to stay out the conflict, but Swedish neutrality without a heap of compromises was probably impossible. And in 46 it had probably become routine.
