Looking remarkably devoid of shipping. George Robey & the Gilly Gilly man would be very worried if this state of affairs continued.
Great photo & brings back lots of memories.

First trip on Maidan 1963 and first time at Suez. Bum Boat Johnny came on board selling all things eastern from stuffed leather camels, tatty metal ashtrays, dubious "french novels" to some sort of "postcards" the like I had never seen before. I mean to say, an 18 year old first timer newly escaped from his mothers apron strings....................needless to say I purchased a stuffed camel.....not.

Neither did I and even if I had done then I would have given them away to a shipmate before venturing home in case parents found them. Well that's what I would have done if I had been silly enough to buy any.

Jim,
I have a photo of the same scene taken from a similar angle & featuring the British Beacon. The photo was taken in 1960 by an Egyptian photographer & is hand coloured (yuk). We were parked up there waiting to head off in the midnight convoy. Impossible to sleep with that bloody lighthouse right outside the window. There was something to be said for portholes.....at least they had deadlights. Will post photo later for comparison.

I think this was taken from the Manipur coming home, we had got full way and were by then wound up with everything going full balast next stop Tilburato full revs for about 20 minutes when the telegraph rung for stop!
We did go thro the motions in the engine room, apparently a barge had just crossed under our bows, luckily he made it as we did not slow down.

So I was reliably informed the paper those books were printed on could double up as blotting paper, mopped up spills and mess superbly , well so I was told .

Actually got ashore once in Port Said and was quite impressed with the town , nice wide boulevards and had one of the best meals I've ever had . Prawn Curry (Thumb)
