I seem to remember reading somewhere that as built she did not have a conventional ship's wheel, but was fitted with a push button remote stearing system, which made her a nightmare to take through the Suez Canal. Can anyone confirm?

Hi Fred,
I found an article in Hansa, Juli 1935, that POTSDAM was indeed fitted with a new kind of push button steering system, made by Atlas-Werke. One year earlier Siemens also fitted this kind of steering on Belgium cross channel ferry PRINCE BAUDOUAIN which was a great success.
Best wishes, Manfred
